#### **Cons:**1. **High Initial Cost** Jacobson engines, especially high-performance models like the U418, are expensive upfront. The price may be prohibitive for small-scale or budget-conscious buyers.
2. **Complex Maintenance** Due to its size and power, the U418 requires skilled technicians for regular maintenance, inspections, and repairs. Poor maintenance can lead to costly breakdowns.
3. **Fuel Consumption** While not excessively inefficient, the U418 consumes more fuel than smaller or more modern engines, which can be a drawback for frequent or long-duration operations.
4. **Weight and Space Requirements** The engine is heavy and bulky, requiring a sturdy mounting system and adequate space in the vessel or machinery. This may limit its use in smaller boats or tight installations.
5. **Noise and Vibration** Like many high-power engines, the U418 can produce significant noise and vibration, which may require additional soundproofing or isolation measures for comfortable operation.
6. **Limited Modern Features** Compared to newer diesel engines, the U418 lacks advanced fuel injection systems, emissions control technologies, or digital diagnostics, which can make it less efficient or compliant with newer regulations in some regions.
7. **Resale Value** Jacobson engines, while durable, may not hold their value as well as some newer or more widely used brands, depending on market demand.

### **Conclusion**
The Jacobson U418 Hit Engine is a **powerful, durable, and reliable** choice for heavy-duty marine or industrial applications where raw performance and longevity are prioritized. Its front shaft mount design and robust construction make it well-suited for large boats, tugs, or machinery where space and weight are not critical limitations. However, its **high cost, complex maintenance needs, and fuel consumption** make it less ideal for budget-conscious or small-scale users. Additionally, modern buyers may find its lack of advanced fuel efficiency and emissions technology a drawback.
If you require **maximum power, durability, and a proven workhorse engine** for demanding applications, the U418 is an excellent investment. However, if you are operating on a tight budget, need fuel efficiency, or require easier maintenance, you may want to consider alternatives like newer diesel engines or smaller Jacobson models.
### **Recommendation:** - **Buy the U418 if:**- You need a **high-torque, long-lasting engine** for heavy-duty marine or industrial use.
- You have the **budget and resources** for maintenance and potential repairs.
- You prioritize **proven reliability** over modern efficiency features.
- Your application requires **compact power transmission** (front shaft mount).
- **Consider alternatives if:**- You are working with a **limited budget** and need cost-effective operation.
- Fuel efficiency is a **top priority**, and you can tolerate slightly less power.
- You require **easier maintenance or modern diagnostics**.
- Your application is **small-scale or not heavily loaded**, where a smaller engine would suffice.
For most **large commercial or industrial users**, the U418 remains a **strong, well-supported choice**. For recreational or smaller-scale users, evaluating newer or more fuel-efficient engines may be more practical.
Other parts included were in the box with front side mount so they may or not be for engine. Possibly a front side mount shaft and other parts. It appears to be brass. See the pictures for details and message me with any questions.
Mounting holes are 2 apart. 1/8 diameter shaft and 3 1/2 long. The ball stud and wheel roller look similar to the engine I seen in a YouTube video so they are included. The shaft fits tight but I can move it with a pair of channel locks.
U418 part number. Parts for hit and miss engine possibly Jacobson Bulls Eye. 5/8 slotted hole.
